Emiko Shekem and Tony Chiappetta
July 28, 2013
St. Mary of the Annunciation, Mundelein, Ill.

GENERAL
Couple’s Name: Emiko Shekem and Tony Chiappetta
Wedding Date: July 28, 2013
Wedding Location: St. Mary of the Annunciation, Mundelein, Ill.

ABOUT THE COUPLE
How they met: Emiko visited Tony’s family’s business, Chiappetta Shoes, for the first time five years ago on a mission for new workout shoes. Tony helped her and they hit it off right away. The shoes she wanted had to be ordered. When she returned to pick them up, Tony asked her out while he was putting her shoe on, Cinderella style. They had their first date two days later.
How he proposed: On his 28th birthday, Tony told Emiko he wanted to go to Rustico, which is where they had their first date and had become regular customers. The waitress brought out a piece of tiramisu with a candle in it and placed it in front of Emiko. She politely tried to tell her that it was actually Tony’s birthday, then realized that there was a ring box with a sparkly diamond ring on the plate and Tony was down on one knee in front of her. Tony said a lot of nice things that Emiko doesn’t remember, she said yes, and the rest is history.
Bride’s occupation: Kindergarten teacher at Southport Elementary
Groom’s occupation: Manager at Chiappetta Shoes

THE CEREMONY
The ceremony: Emiko’s uncle was the pastor at St. Mary of the Annunciation, Mundelein, Ill., while she was growing up, and many family celebrations were held there over the years.
The gown: Tulle ball gown by Tara Keely. Emiko’s mother made a sash for her that incorporated 53-year-old buttons borrowed from Emiko’s aunt’s wedding dress. Emiko made her own wedding jewelry, including a necklace and shoe baubles, from vintage pins and earrings she found at estate sales and antique shops.
The bouquet: Bridesmaids carried simple bouquets made of three large cream-colored garden roses. Emiko’s bouquet was made up of blush-colored garden roses, and had a blue butterfly hidden in it from a birthday bouquet Tony had sent her.
The theme: Eclectic shabby-chic, with an Art Deco twist.

THE WEDDING PARTY
Maid of honor: Laura Manson
Bridesmaids: Meghan Smith, Sarah Smith, Jenny Silva, Ashley Birkholz, Sara McNamara and Kelly Schneeman
Best man: Nicholas Chiappetta
Groomsmen: Mitchell Ferraro, Kyle Perfetto, Jacob Egmose, Jason Church, Nathaniel Shekem and Colin Shekem

THE RECEPTION
Number of guests: 180
The reception: Independence Grove, Libertyville, Ill.
The cake: A small ceremonial cake and desserts were served while guests danced and mingled outside. Desserts included mini ice cream sundaes, Oberweiss milk shots and warm chocolate chip cookies and tiramisu.
First song: Their band’s live rendition of “Unchained Melody.”
The menu: Hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, oven-roasted beef sirloin rolled in cracked pepper with a bordelaise sauce and grilled salmon set atop pommes frites with horseradish cream sauce and sauteed spinach.
What made the day unique: Emiko designed all of the wedding stationary and invitations, which were inspired by 1920s Art Deco posters. Guests received jars of Tony’s famous pasta sauce, which he spent all Fourth of July weekend making with his brother and one of his ushers. Centerpieces and reception decor were created by Emiko from an eclectic mix of vases, candles, and other treasures she collected from antique shops. The groomsmen were treated to shoes and socks from Chiappetta Shoes.
Most touching moment of the day: Emiko’s brothers walked her down the aisle, but before that, the split-second of seeing her husband and all of their loved ones waiting for her was a poignant moment she will never forget.
Honeymoon destination: Key West and Miami, Fla.
